A Fresh Door Color & Christmas Decorating

CheriCHRISTMAS, DECORATING, GENERAL, RECENT

There’s something about the change of seasons that always nudges me toward a little refresh at home. Sometimes it’s a small shift—a new wreath, a rearranged corner—and sometimes it’s a bold splash of color right on the front door. This year, that splash came in the form of a new paint choice, an unexpected shade that brought our whole entryway to life.

Changing The Front Door Color

Earlier this fall, I decided it was time for a little change at our front door. Our blue door had served us well, but I was craving something different. So I gathered a handful of paint swatches, narrowed them down to a few, and left them out for my friend, Marian, to take a look at and help me decide on the color while she was staying a our house recently. She has a wonderfully intuitive eye, and I trusted her to make the final call.

Choosing Benjamin Moore Avocado Green

As it turned out, we were both drawn to the same shade: Avocado green by Benjamin Moore. The moment it went up on the door, I knew we’d made the right choice. The green color felt welcoming and grounded, a color that played beautifully with the natural tones around our home. A newly painted door also meant I would be painting the shutters, so I ran to Menards and purchased new shutters, painted them, and then ran out of time to hang them! We will get them hung in the next week or two – probably in the cold!

GReen door decorated for christmas

With a freshly painted front door cheering me on, I was eager to jump into Christmas decorating outdoors. And since the Minnesota weather gifted us the rare treat of a mild weekend, I took full advantage—there was no time like the present!

This year, I challenged myself to try something new at the entry: rethinking and reusing what I already had on hand. My tendency is always to do a little too much, so I’ve been practicing the art of reeling myself in, editing instead of adding. Sometimes that means I add, then edit! It’s amazing what a shift in perspective can do. By working with natural elements from our property, Red Twig Dogwood and Curly Willow branches, pine cones and birch logs I stored from seasons past, the whole space came together in a simple, natural way that feels deeply satisfying.

In the end, the biggest surprise wasn’t just how much I loved the new green door—it was how a simple color change encouraged me to see everything else with fresh eyes. Reusing, reimagining, simplifying… it all felt like a quiet reset before the holidays. And now, each time I walk up to the house, I’m greeted not just by a new color on the door, but by a sense of calm creativity. I love creating changes that make home feel a little more like home. Sometimes a small change—like an avocado green door—opens the door (quite literally!) to a fresh wave of creativity.
