Givin’ a hoot

CheriGENERAL

It’s that time of the year.
It happens every February at The Cottage.

The Great Horned Owls begin nesting.
Their “hooting” can be heard through our closed windows and doors
and even with the television or radio on.

You can experience the sounds we hear each night here:

We enjoy having the owls hanging out around The Cottage — for the aesthetics is an obvious reason, but mostly because most (up to 90 percent) of a Great Horned Owl’s diet is mice (around 4,000 per year), voles, squirrels, and other small mammals.  All of which we have plenty of around here.  It is also one of the few animals that will kill a skunk!

A fun fact about Great horned owls:  they have long eye lashes!
