Just passing through

CheriGENERAL

This post is for all my friends who I forget to tell about the best places to stop for food as they pass through the Calumet Region – my hometown – a.k.a Northwest Indiana.  That place that smells of oil refineries. If you’ve ever driven through, you know what I’m talkin’ about.

As friends from Michigan drove out our driveway late Saturday night, I realized I had failed yet again, to tell these travelers, (and many others) who would soon be driving through our old stompin’ ground on their way home, that there are some amazing “where the locals eat” places along the way.  Places that are definitely worth the hop off the expressway to grab some grub.

Places like the local Schoop’s diner.  Mr. D and I stopped here, one of favorite spots, on our way home from Cincy a couple weeks ago.

It’s been a long time since Mr. D and I had a Schoop’s burger.  We were not disappointed.  After visiting their website, I see they are now offering franchises.  We weren’t at a franchise friends.  We ate at an original.  The place hadn’t changed much.  I could almost picture myself as a young girl sitting in a particular booth with my family.  I also remembered where I sat when I left my retainer wrapped in a napkin and it was tossed out.  Uggh.

I love that the booth’s still have the table side juke boxes.  As a kid, I’d beg for a dime to choose a song.

I still remember how excited I was that someone in the diner chose exactly the song I would have selected.

The big juke box is still there too!

But this is what you go for…
The burger.

You’ll thank me.
