Simple Crochet Dishcloth

CheriCREATIVE ENDEAVORS

handmade dishcloth

When I was 19 years old I crocheted a granny square afghan. My grandmother taught me – as I sat beside her, while she crocheted beautiful afghans for her two daughters and 6 granddaughters.

dishcloth description

I made a creamy white, basic granny square. My grandmother made beautiful, delicate and lace-like squares. I’ll post a photo of the afghan she made me later since I’m far from home in the warmth of Florida visiting our adult son and forgot to take a photograph before leaving.

dishcloths

After Kirk and I married and moved to Upstate New York, I used crocheting to have something to do while we watched football games on the weekend. I think I had a project with me most of the time!

Then we had three babies. Very close together. Hobbies and crafts took a backseat for a few years.

About 15 years ago Kirk’s Aunt Betty renewed my interest in crocheting. My mother-in-love had a nice collection of Betty’s dishcloths – which Betty made in a small version so my dear mother-in-love could easily use them with her crippled hands, from Rheumatoid Arthritis. Doing dishes with these handmade dishcloths felt good, and I knew I needed to learn how to make some for myself.

dishcloth directions

So on a visit to St. Louis to spend time with my in-loves, Betty brought her yarn, a crochet hook for me, and her handwritten directions. And we made a dishcloth together. It’s a memory I will always cherish, along with her handwritten directions.

Over the last several weeks I’ve made quite a few dishcloths. They will be as a place card and favor for an upcoming bridal shower. We are still working through how we will set the table with them. Maybe something like this below …. maybe above the plate (not this plate) and maybe with a sprig of flowers or rosemary added.

Many of you have asked for the pattern, so I’m including it here.
