Totally didn’t expect to be interrupting my scheduled posting plan for this post.
Last night at 10:30pm my number one (and only) son offered me the opportunity to run with him in the Red, White and Boom race in Minneapolis. Friends had backed out. I could take one of their places. Unexpected.
Wake up time: 3:45 am
Leave the house time: 4:15 am
Race start time: 6:30 am.
Record heat. Record heat index.
My day off.
I’ve never, ever run in a race before.
In the few short hours I had to sleep, I managed to have several dreams nightmares that I’d forgotten how to run. Brutal.
Originally a half marathon, this race was reduced to a 5 mile run due to the extreme heat.
Wouldn’t have considered the half. Five was do-able.
I had no personal bests to beat. Nobody to impress. Not afraid that I might have to walk. (There were many walkers). We walked very little. (I say less than a mile, Nate thinks a little more than a mile) I walk much faster than Nate. Unexpected. š
“Best moments” . . .
1. Watching the little girls running/sprinting/walking along with us at the end — they were about 8 or 9 years old, chatting it up the entire time.
2. Realizing I was actually running this …. and not hurting or out of breath. Unexpected.
3. Crossing the finish line sprinting to keep my time under an hour! (Seriously, how did I sprint that last 1/2 block?) Very unexpected.
4. The high five from my boy at the end of the race. Unexpected. Loved.
5. A hot dog with mustard at 7:40 am. Unexpected. Never consumed a dog that early before.
For those who like numbers…. these were my (unexpected) stats this morning…
