Thrifting Treasures: The Joy of the Hunt

CheriA Slice of Life, ALL THINGS HOME, RECENT

There’s something satisfying about the thrill of the thrift. The hunt, the surprise finds, the stories behind each item—it’s a little bit of magic wrapped in a good bargain, a vintage find and a favorite cookbook.

Last week, Nate and I carved out a morning to hit up a few of our favorite local thrift spots. I had no agenda—just a cup of coffee in hand, a free couple of hours, and the hope that something special might catch my eye. That’s the beauty of thrifting: it’s less about finding something specific and more about being open to discovering what you didn’t know you needed. That said, I do have a short list of favorites I always keep an eye out for—things like ironstone, vintage baskets, cookbooks, and vintage picture frames.

Here’s what came home with me:

thrifted Weck jars

✨ Two perfect Weck Jars

— Weck jars are staple in many European kitchens, especially in Germany where they originated in the early 1900s. I absolutely love using them—they’re beautifully designed and so functional—but they tend to be a bit pricey. Because of that, I usually stick to classic Ball Mason jars for most of my canning (fruits, jams, etc.) and for pantry storage like chocolate chips, nuts, and spices. Mason jars are budget-friendly and easy to find, while Weck jars are more of a splurge. For reference, the tall Weck jars often run around $20 each on Amazon! Weck jars are a treat, and I absolutely love the thrill of spotting them at thrift stores! It feels like finding a little treasure among the shelves—especially knowing they typically go for around $20 each online. Scoring one (or two!) for just a few dollars makes the hunt even more rewarding.

Thrifted French woven basket

A vintage French Wicker basket with a woven handle

One of my favorite finds this time was a French woven basket—the kind that’s perfect for gathering flowers or harvesting veggies from the garden.so stumbling across it at a thrift store felt like such a win. It’s both beautiful and practical, and I can already picture it filled with zinnias, herbs, or tomatoes from the backyard.

The other basket is a French bread basket – Of course, it’s perfect for serving baguettes or rolls, but it’s also great for hosting—ideal on a picnic or buffet table for holding silverware, chips, napkins, or fruit. I love how something so simple can feel so elegant.

Ina Garten Cookbooks 📚

Another fun thrift store find: two Ina Garten cookbooks! 📚 I already have a few of hers on my kitchen shelf, and while they aren’t recently published, these were new to me—and such a treat to find. I’ve always loved Ina’s approach to cooking: simple, elegant, and full of flavor. Her story is inspiring, and her recipes never let me down.

The Joy Is in the Hunt

There’s something so satisfying about coming home with a few special finds—pieces that feel like they were just waiting for you. I love imagining how they’ll be used in everyday life. That’s what makes thrifting so magical: it’s not just about saving money, it’s about slowing down, being curious, and letting the unexpected delight you. I’m already using these treasures in my home.
