Choosing a Recliner

CheriDECORATING, GREAT ROOM

Kirk has been requesting a recliner for many, many years and I have dodged the request for just as long. Until recently.

Searching for a recliner

Our search for a recliner we both could agree to has been years in the works. We looked at many recliners, read many reviews, and tested chairs when possible. We looked both online and in many stores. Each of us had a checklist for what we wanted regarding the recliners. Kirk’s list included a comfortable chair that “fit” him well head-to-toe and he preferred leather upholstery. Of course, aesthetics were high on my list. I didn’t want the recliner to look like a typical recliner. A big bulky, overstuffed recliner just isn’t my style. I preferred the chairs to be stylish, not too tall or wide, and look good in our space, and be comfortable. We both wanted quality and well-built chairs that would last a long time. Also, we would be purchasing two recliners.

Make room for two recliners

Our great room currently has a sofa, loveseat, and an accent chair for seating and we don’t have many options for arranging the room to view the television. We know we will have to remove the loveseat to make room for two recliners. While close friends of ours are out of town escaping a Minnesota winter for a couple of months, they loaned us their recliners to test. I must say it didn’t take long for us to acclimate to the chairs.

Choosing and purchasing new furniture is often stressful for me. I doubt my decisions, question my ability to choose just the right thing, and fear being disappointed with my choice after spending so much money.

The last stop on our recliner search was Room and Board in Edina, Minnesota. The chairs we borrowed from our friends are from Room and Board and after spending some time on the website looking at recliner options I was pretty sure we could find a chair that we both could agree to.

Last Saturday we took a drive to the Cities to look at the recliners, stopping first at the Room and Board Outlet in Golden Valley to see if we could find 2 matching recliners. No surprise to us that they didn’t have matching chairs, but we did enjoy looking around at other furniture.

Next we went to the store in Edina, MN. This showroom is full of beautifully designed rooms.

How to choose a leather recliner

While there were only six chairs for us to sit in and compare, that is all we needed. At Room and Board, we were able to personalize our recliner design. We could choose the style of chair cushions, the arm style, base/legs, and fabric. There are over 30 leather color options and just as many fabric choices for all the styles of chairs.

The profile and size of the chairs are a nice size to fit in almost any space. The chair we purchased, similar to the one pictured above is only 39″ H and 31″W which is less than our accent chair!

It didn’t take us long to personalize our chairs. We chose the Isaac style with rolled arms, a wood base, and the camel color leather. Choosing the leather color was the most difficult decision! I’m still hoping I made the right choice on the color!

However, if I decide I don’t like the leather color choice, or the chair style, or anything else about the chair, we can return it! Their return policy is fabulous. . . .

Returning furniture: “We want you to be happy with your purchase and understand it can take a few days to a few weeks to know if your new items will work for you. We encourage you to make a return or exchange in a timely manner because damaged, worn, or altered items may be refused or result in an adjustment to your refund.

Free cancellations: We don’t charge a fee for canceling items, even custom items or items made just for you.

Free return delivery: We don’t charge a delivery fee for returns or exchanges within the 48 contiguous states. However, original delivery charges are not refundable.

My friend, Marian, Miss Mustard Seed did a blog post on other nice options for recliners a couple of years ago. You can find that post here.

There are many things to consider other than aesthetics when purchasing a recliner. For instance, if you are tall, you’ll want a higher back; how you fit in the chair makes a difference in how comfortable you will be sitting in it, from neck to toes! If you want to keep your chair for a long time, you’ll want a quality piece of furniture.
