Dish Towel Cabinet Skirting

CheriDECORATING, DIY, KITCHEN

I’ve always loved the look of a skirted farmhouse sink. It reminds me of a simpler time and I think it adds so much charm and character to a cottage-style kitchen. So I have found a way to get the look in a different way.

We often have little grandchildren around here (or we used to before the quarantine) so it is best that we have doors below our sink that we can lock to keep the littles safe. Hiding some of the utilitarian items on our open-end cabinets seemed like a good place to add a pretty feature.

Shopping in Waco

When I purchased these towels at The Findery in Waco, Texas I actually envisioned them as a skirt for our open-end cabinets in the kitchen. The Findery is a favorite stop of mine when I’m in Waco. It is Catty-corner to Magnolia Press and a short block from the Silos. It is definitely a must-visit shop in Waco.

I love it as a dish towel, but I really like using the towel as skirting to hide my mixer and the dog food.

Our grandchildren love to feed our dog, Nike – every time they see the food they think it’s time to fill the dog bowl. Maybe, just maybe, this will keep their eyes off the dog food and our dog eating less.

I wasn’t ready to totally give up using this towel for its intended purpose for dishes, and I wasn’t sure if I would like the skirting. So, I decided to sew a rod pocket by hand using a heavy cotton thread that I had in my stash. I also found a couple of yards of this cotton lace to add.

A sewing machine would make removing the stitching difficult, so I used a 6-inch long tapestry needle to baste stitch the rod pocket and the cotton lace on at the same time. It may have been a bit excessive to use such a long needle, but it sure made the basting go quicker!

I folded the towel over about 2″ and pinned the lace on where the stitching would go on the front of the towel.

Then I just basted it all together at the same time. I had a tension rod on hand that fit the space perfectly and in 15 minutes I had the towel hanging on my end of cabinet shelves!

The skirting should be a little fuller. So I plan to order a couple more towels to remedy that, and have an extra to use for dishes! You can purchase these towels on their website here. They also come in black and white.
