When I decided to make our sunroom into my office/studio a few years ago, the first thing I added was an antique teacher’s desk I found on FB Marketplace. You can read a post about my office/studio here. The desk anchored the room and gave the space a vintage cottage feel. Later I added a buffalo plaid chair, a vintage oak file cabinet and a bookshelf – all found on Facebook Marketplace. I really enjoy spending time in this cozy office, creating, and working. It is a space I often dreamed of, and having it featured in Marian’s recent book, Feels Like Home still feels surreal.

A new desk

Recently Marian gifted me the L-shaped office desk from her home office. She is preparing to move out of state soon and didn’t want to move such a large piece of furniture. Moving her desk into my office required me to sell my teacher’s desk … and the plaid chair. Though I really liked the look of the antique desk in my space, the new-to-me desk is much more of a workhorse and allows me to easily create on one side of the desk and still keep computer work on the other side of the desk.

The story of the sale

The best part of selling the teacher’s desk is the story of the sale.

I listed the desk on Facebook Marketplace and within an hour someone contacted me wanting to purchase it. We made arrangements for the upcoming weekend for pick-up and the buyer even paid me in advance for the desk!

The buyers, Amy and Jason, live about two hours from us. Amy was a fabulous communicator about their arrival and they were right on time. We loaded up the desk and the four of us continued to talk in the driveway. The conversation was so easy. Amy had “vetted” me on Facebook and Instagram, and found my blog prior to contacting me about the desk and I also had looked her up on Facebook – safety first! Of course the desk I was selling is featured on each of my social media accounts along with the tan plaid chair so she had seen plenty of photos. After loading the desk into their vehicle Amy mentioned the plaid chair from the photos, and that she would hoped to find one like it. Fortuitously, for Amy and I both, I was planning to list the chair on FB Marketplace the next day.

I invited Amy and Jason in our home to take a look at the chair and ottoman. Walking in the front door, I became very aware my home decor resonnated with Amy and that we have very similar tastes when it comes to furnishing our homes. As we got more acquainted with each other we learned we both enjoy including bits and pieces from our families and using antiques in our home. The chair and matching ottoman were exactly what Amy had envisioned in her home office and I was thrilled to find a good home for the chair. Thankfully, the chair, desk, and ottoman fit in their vehicle, though I secretly hoped they would have to come back for it so we could spend more time together. Then they were off to Wisconsin. A few days later Amy sent me a photo of the desk and chair in their home. It was so fun to see my desk and chair in Amy’s home.

Have you ever met someone and just knew you could be great friends? Kirk and I felt this way with Amy and Jason and were a bit sad they lived a couple hours away. They are a delightful couple. I’m hopeful they find something else on FB Marketplace that will bring them to Rochester … maybe next time we can catch lunch or dinner together. Amy and I do text now and then — I think we might just need to meet somewhere in the middle for dinner! Hint, Hint.
